If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our office right away. To get your dental treatment plan you should see our dentist first.

Acute Toothache

Severe toothache is called “acute” for a reason. This is one of the most alarming symptoms indicating the development of diseases of the dentoalveolar system. A sudden pain attack can provoke a temperature or taste stimulus, in addition the tooth can become very sensitive when you are chewing on it causing physical pressure. Often, the pain syndrome occurs on its own, and the only desire of the patient is the desire to get rid of unbearable pain. Such conditions are a reason for seeking emergency dental care. Even if you manage to push through the symptoms on your own, only an experienced dentist can establish and eliminate the root cause of the problem.

Acute toothache: causes and how to relieve the pain

There are many factors and diseases that provoke a strong pain syndrome:

  • Deep tooth decay. It hurts periodically, typically, after direct contact with sweet, hot, or cold food or beverages. Or you may have a toothache when you are chewing and putting pressure on that tooth;
  • Your tooth also may be very sensitive if a layer of enamel is very thin;
  • Unfortunately, even a dead tooth may cause tooth pain or if your body rejects the dead tooth ( dentist call it a “dead tooth” when Root Canal Treatment has been performed) or the nerve of the tooth has died
  • Mechanical trauma with exposure to dentin (for example a car accident)
  • Acute pulpitis — inflammation of the dental neurovascular bundle. It hurts unbearably and almost around the clock, with a characteristic «recoil» in the temporal region or ear

As you can see, there are a lot of reasons for why you may experience tooth pain. The best way to find the right solution is to do a dental x-ray first. After the x-ray, the dentist will be able to explain to you the step by step treatment plan. Together with our dentist you can find the best option for you.

Don’t try to get rid of the discomfort on your own. It may seem to you that the pain has stopped, but dental problems do not go away on their own. Having started rapidly, the disease simply passes into a chronic or sluggish phase, giving you less inconvenience. The nerve tissue is affected, pathogenic microbes multiply, which means that formidable complications may develop — phlegmon, abscesses, or osteomyelitis. It is not easy to cure a neglected pathology even with modern dentistry technology.
