Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I need dental cleaning?
The American Dental Association recommends that people visit the dentist at least once every six months for a dental cleaning and exam. During your dental visit, we remove plaque buildup and polish your teeth. We also look for any early signs of oral health concerns and recommend necessary treatments to keep your smile healthy.
How can I stop bleeding gums?
Bleeding gums is one of the most serious signs of gum disease. If you’re experiencing bleeding gums when eating, flossing, or brushing, visit our dental clinic as soon as possible. We will assess your oral health and provide you with gum disease treatment if necessary. Early intervention is the best way to halt and even reverse gum disease.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains from the teeth and around the gumline. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, cleans beneath the gumline and is used to treat gum disease.
Can gum disease be reversed?
The earliest stage, called gingivitis, can often be reversed with a professional cleaning and consistent brushing and interdental cleaning at home. More advanced periodontal disease requires ongoing professional treatment and maintenance.
How do I know whether I have a cavity?
Some cavities cause sensitivity, discomfort, visible dark areas, or pain when eating sweets, but early decay may not cause any noticeable symptoms. Dental examinations and appropriate X-rays can help detect cavities before they become larger or more painful.
What is the difference between a filling and a crown?
A filling replaces a smaller area of tooth structure damaged by decay or wear. A crown covers and strengthens more of the tooth and may be recommended when a tooth is significantly weakened, cracked, or has a very large filling.
Why are my teeth sensitive?
Sensitivity can have several causes, including cavities, gum recession, worn enamel, cracks, exposed roots, or older restorations. Because treatment depends on the cause, persistent or worsening sensitivity should be evaluated by a dentist.
